BEST OF SOUTH => Castles of Ludwig II, walking in the scenery of the alps, rural countrylife in the Allgäu, metropolitan life in Munich with museums etc.

Suggestions for a roadtrip (originated from a mail to Emily on SV Emily-Luna)

Imho the key might be to concentrate on mayor sights to have time and fun [or bring more time :-)

General:

  • I recommend doing the long passages from/to Frankfurt by train, there are family tickets to ride: Bahn.de (Maybe a good idea to get infos in a local "Reisebüro")
  • To explore the South a car would be a good choice
  • If you take a car: Avoid the start/end of school-holidays in the mayor federal states to drive on the mayor routes (I prefer to drive on a sunday, because generally lorry-trafic is not allowed then). (=> Chances of staying hours on the motorways [where you could drive 250+km/h with no traffic, turns maybe to 25km/h])
  • => check the Autoclub ADAC for forecasts of trafficjams and in which direction it is forecasted !!!!!
  • It can be even a good idea to time the flights accordingly and to reserve seats in the trains

  • If you are going in the high season or during local festival-time with a big party, you might would like to reserve some places to stay in advance.
  • In the countryside I would try to stay in private "Ferienwohnungen" (contact via "Fremdenverkehrsbüro" of the village)
  • Munich = München, is most expensive - you have to find your possibilities, depending on the budget (city or suburb) - if you made up a plan to stay there for "the last days" I would book early (e.g. "Motel One" or via airbnb)

  • Take local guided "walkingtours in english" wherever possible !!!
  • Check world-heritage sites in Germany on Wikipedia
  • Get a map for an overview and for driving => go to the local automobilclub ADAC-office and ask for some maps and tourist recommendations for your trip (if you have a membershipcard of an foreign automobilclub it is normally free (or with a charming smile maybe anyway:-)
  • a detailed offlinemap (e.g. mapsme or herewego maps on android) is helpful to find the way to an accomodation

      • I strongly recommend using a map and Wikipedia.de :-) for getting the drift on the details below
      You will find some more links on Haus-Sahr.de or just google it.

      Imho it is better to stay longer in one place and use it as a hub to have fun and explore, than to have "seen everything", but not really have seen or enjoying it
      In each of the areas below you could easily stay weeks exploring ... :-)


      THE MIDDLE - Frankfurt Area:

      (maybe 2 nights, to get rid of the jetlag (going east can be uncomfortable) or depending on your time just go south immediately):

      Bad Homburg and surrounding

      • Saalburg - roman castle on the Limes (The Limes is a world heritage site; the castle was rebuild and is more interesting :-)
      • Hessenpark - historic buildings for the older ones and lots of animals for little ones - great bakery! (doing this is possible by public transport (check rmv.de or you rent a car/bus))

      Frankfurt

      • Frankfurt with Römer and newly rebuild Old Town (compare pictures after WW II and today!)
      • Staedel-Museum - great classical paintings - masterpieces
      • quite interesting cemeteries as well (with a guided Tour!)
      • Museumsuferfest - great festival on the riversides end of July

      • Alternatively take a Boatstour on the river Rhein, great landscape in the Rheingau-area (good wine and food) with plenty of medival castles and vinyards; illuminated at night with fireworks at special times "Rhein in Flammen"
      • Alternatively check out Grube Messel - Worldheritage Site with unique fosils (Mini-Horses, Crocodiles etc.) near Darmstadt (40min drive)
        and afterwards visit the Art Noveau at the Matildenhöhe and have a swim later in the Art-Nouveau-Thermalbath in Darmstadt and eat persian food at Shiraz (best noon buffet)
      Eat: "Frankfurter Grüne Soße" (if it is made with Mayonaise then you are in the wrong restaurant => avoid => ask before ordering)
      Drink: "Apfelwein" (Äppelwoi) - I recommend starting with only a very small amount :-)) or in season (autumn) "Süßer" freshly squeezed apples (no alcohol)


      SOUTH-ALLGÄU

      The South is beer and cheese heaven - often you find craft-beer and a local cheese-factory to visit (quite different quality to what you get vacuum-packed in a supermarket :-) and chances are high that you find a good bakery which is still doing bread by themselfs and not getting factory-reheated stuff!
      (a couple of nights, maybe 4-5)

      Ulm / Memmingen

      • Ulm - the Ulmer Münster (Church) has the highest european churchtower until the Familia Sagrada in Barcelona will be finished. The fortress(es) is a world heritage site, actually too big and scattered to see all of it.
        Mid Juli "Fischerstechen" on the Donau and a Parade.

      • Memmingen - beautiful old town (Dagmar's hometown) where the Wallensteinfestival, one of the biggest historic festivals in Europe takes place (every 4 years, e.g.2020), and for chocolate lovers there is a factoryshop ! nearby in Woringen (Autobahn A7): Heileman Confiserie
      • Goldsmith Buhmann - unique jewelry in the Memmingen-City-Center (opposite of the hall)
      • Memmingen events and culture - what's going on in town
      • El Greco - good greek restaurant in Memmingen (not typical for the region :-)
      • Gasthof Hirsch - good typical restaurant near Memmingen (SSW)
      • Ottobeuren Abbey - Surprising big baroque Basilica Minor in a little town
      • Rössle Gasthof in Leutkirch - good regional Allgäu food
      • Glashütte Schmidsfelden - glasworks in Leutkirch / Allgäu
      Eat: "Geschwollene und eine Seele"


      Maybe end the day in or near (sometimes the little villages are cute to stay, mostly more "real life" and often less expensive/better value for money)

    • Eistobel - Nice Walk near Isny (slippery when wet) [calculate 3+h (or walk fast!)]
    • Käseküche Isny Kaeskueche-Isny - good organic cheese with the possibility to have a look on the process (imho better than visiting Isny itself)



      • Füssen

      • Castle Neuschwanstein - King Louie at his best (the blueprint for the castle in Disneyworld :-) near Füssen
      Eat: "Bayerischer Wurstsalat"


      Oberstdorf

      • Breitachklamm spectacular little canyon in Bavaria - water is harder than stone, near Oberstdorf, a nice village with skijump (go up there to have a llok down and think if you are brave enough to jump ...:-)

      Proceed via Bad Hindelang (visit the cheesefactory and the cheeseshops and buy a hammered forged iron-pan in an old hammer-mill to do great "Bratkartoffeln" (good for steak as well)) [Eat: Kässpatzen [Käse-Spätzle] and via Schloss Linderhof and a bit of Austria (where you should fill up your tank => cheaper fuel), in Austria you will pass the village "Ehrwald" where they had in 2013 a tiny shop with great local products (cheese, ham etc.) "Dorfladen Ehrwald" (+43 664 733 46009). you might want to stop at the Tänzelfest in Kaufbeuren ca. 1600 kids doing history in mid July (ESE of Memmingen)

      Next stop is (between Munich and Ulm):

      Landsberg am Lech

      (2 nights)
      • nice old towncenter in Landsberg
      • visit the Kaltenberger Ritterspiele" - great historic knightsfestival with a grat horseshow in an old castle near Landsberg/Munich (summer every year)
      • a short trip to the town Augsburg - nice old towncenter and do a tour in the Fuggerei

      pass Munich in the south and go to the lake in the area called "Chiemgau", lovely landscape => my favorite in Germany.
      Stop at Café Winklstüberl - cakeparadise near Schliersee

SOUTH-EAST


Chiemsee - a lake in a great setting

(a couple of nights, maybe 4-5, we often stayed in big farmhouses with lots of rooms a bit out of town)

Eat: "Renken" - a local fish

Chiemsee: more links and detailed infos where to live and eat etc.

If :-) you still have time for daytrips:


proceed via small, scenic roads through the hinterland towards

Munich

(a couple of nights, maybe 3)
  • München (Munich) - tons of indoor and outdoor activities for every taste => check their website;
Eat: "Weißwürstchen und eine Brezel"


On the way back to Frankfurt:


=> too much to do ??? time is too short ??? => Do not rush, COME BACK !!!
